Prohibition Underground Lounge

Hotel Rosewood Georgia has delivered what they’ve been promising for two years and it was worth the wait.

Speak easy

A new bar is in town and it’s called Prohibition. It combines luxurious pleasure, class and gluten-free options, plus has staff that didn’t give me the rolling-of-eyes when asked if each offering was gluten free, which made it a lovely night that was probably not unlike an evening in a big city sometime in the 1920s. The privilege to be yourself.

The 1920s were about freedom and prohibition – another example of the juxtapositions of society over the years. A brief moment in history between one disaster and another, the roaring twenties delivered a time to fight for individual rights, heal from a war and rebel against archaic rules. It was a time to be hedonistic.

GM Bernhard Wimmer said: “Prohibition is everything, it’s got class, and it’s special..”

…to the lobby of Hotel Georgia’s understated elegance where the lobby and 1927 Lobby Lounge is an indulgent space with warm lighting, comfortable seating, muted conversations, quiet clinking of glasses and silently gliding servers. One feels impelled to comport oneself with dignity here.

Step outside, enter Prohibition through the side doors leading into the basement and forget about understated elegance… hello decadence!

A stunning chandelier hung above the room, highlighting the scene at play beneath.

Guys in dapper suits and Dolls in twenties-inspired blue dresses greeted everyone with warmth and welcoming smiles.

A big band played loud jazz music on a tiny stage just like the roaring evenings in the early 1920s.

Mirrors reflect the room all around, soft lighting, intimate conversation seating, small dance area…

A wall of artfully displayed black and white snapshots depicting those wickedly innocent years during prohibition.

And there were of course swanky colours and textures of the time.

Reiko Mackenzie, of Corsa, was there in a blue feather dress was there chatting about her beer.

…and of Corsa the Ferrari was parked outside.

Amuse-bouches offered a taste of what can be ordered in full serving sizes: oysters, fish, grilled pineapple with jalapeño and mint, smoked gouda, caviar and more.

Drinks in appropriate coupes instead of flutes inspired one to slow down, sip and socialize.

So there you have it.  Big-band music will pull  you onto the dance floor, you’ll want to embrace the era of debonaire men and elegantly elegant flapper women. Food will satisfy your craving for small bites to complement unique cocktails.

Not one fraction of Prohibition failed to deliver, every tiny detail kept up with appearances. Be encompassed by a time of freedom and innocence. Prohibit, titillate and exhibit yourself at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Yep, Prohibition delivered and then some.

Last but certainly very important… bathrooms that are a whole new level of holy wow! A room of one’s own.
